Magic Mountain

Can you talk about the themes on the album?

It’s almost entirely based on the issues that were immediate to me at the time. Lots of complicated emotions I had during one relationship in particular, my feelings for him, the begrudging feelings I was having over his career launching when I felt I was stalling, and disorientation when the relationship ended. I really thought we would be together for a very long time.

There are some other themes in there. There’s anger emerging in a couple of songs, a reaction to feeling so voiceless in the face a kind of arrogance I noticed in a lot of institutions.

How was it recorded?

All the songs were recorded in the rooms I occupied in various shared houses over my time living in Bristol. Most of it was recorded on an 8-track with a cheap condenser mic and an SM57, but for a few of them I ventured into using synth sounds on my laptop. It didn’t have much RAM so I had to freeze most of the tracks to record new parts.

Grayling Motion

Jaunty rhythms and relaxing melodies, the title is an oblique reference to the search for the Holy Grail.
